Reading Respone #1

Question: 1b. On page 10 of this reading assignment, Tomlinson says, “… we teach responsively when we understand the need to teach the human beings before us as well as to teach the content with which we are charged. … [It] is important to begin with the conviction that we are no longer teaching if what we teach is more important than who we teach or how we teach.” What does this mean to you?

After reading this quote a couple of things came to mind. First, as Tomlinson states, there is a better order in teaching and before we teach content we teach the human being. It's not a matter of merely conveying information from one person to another but the way it is conveyed. We as human's are all different and have different learning styles as Howard Gardner states with his 8 intelligences. I especially love the last part which strongly supports not only differentiation but I believe it also supports Howard's theory of multiple intelligences: "It is important to begin with the conviction that we are no longer teaching if what we teach is more important that who we teach or how we teach."--in short, person first, than curriculum!
